Northeastern University College Democrats’ Mission Statement

The mission of the Northeastern University’s College Democrats is to discuss and promote the views, ideology, and policies of the Democratic Party both at Northeastern and in the larger community.

As Democrats, we have specific policy interests that fall under an underlying theme of respect and equality for all. We are made up of activists, grassroots organizers, and individuals with specific policies and issues they deeply care about.

Our scope includes, but is not limited to, fighting for livable wages, affordable healthcare, equality for all regardless of race, sex, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation, a respect for the environment over a respect for corporate policies that directly harm the environment, a respect for entrepreneurs and small businesses, fair tax policies, equal access and opportunity to jobs and education. Ultimately, we believe we are able to work more effectively for all of these policy aims when we work together.

As the College Democrats of Northeastern University, we hold weekly meetings on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. where we engage in political discourse, host speakers, and make plans to launch ourselves into the political jungle outside of our school community.

Up until this point, our club has been involved a constant cycle of campaigning. Not only did we campaign for and elect Barack Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey and Joe Kennedy III (just to name a few), but we also encouraged the Northeastern University community to participate in the election by through voter registration drives. An integral part of our mission as a club is to ensure that everyone get involved in the political process. We encourage all those who are eligible to vote and get active in their community.

We hope to continue to engage ourselves in the political process by campaigning for Democratic candidates, but we also hope to broaden our horizons to some of the bigger issues that we face.

We feel that though Northeastern is a very liberal campus – we are not a very politically engaged campus, and we’d like to change that through more exposure to politics. We hope to host more forums and invite more speakers to come and speak on behalf of the Northeastern Democrats and the Democratic Party as a whole. We want to make political discourse a topic that is not to be shied away from and quell political apathy in students.

Ultimately, as a club we aim to encourage participation in the democratic process and promote the ideals of the Democratic Party.
